ALICE and AIML
Alice is a web based software robot which has won the Loebner Prize the past two years (2000 and 2001). The Loebner Prize is awarded annually to the designer of a computer program that best succeeds in passing a variant of the Turing test. The prize challenges Artificial Intelligence (AI) gurus from all over the world to design a computer program that can convince at least half the judging panel that it is human (https://www.loebner.net/Prizef/loebner-prize.html).
For more information on Alice, or to actually talk to a version of Alice, visit the organization that develops and maintains Alice. http://www.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=f5d922d97e345aa1.
Alice is written in AIML (Artificial Intelligence Markup Language) which is also a derivative of XML (Extensible Markup Language). The language describes a class of objects and partially describes how a computer program should respond when those objects are referenced. An AIML interpreter reads the AIML language and interacts with the user. There are many different variants of Alice around the Internet, either to provide specialized information and knowledge or to entertain a user.
